Ever watch a documentary about the American Civil War on the History Channel? They inevitably show early black and white photos of battlefields strewn with hundreds of dead. Despite the blurriness and deterioration, I find these images deeply unsettling and poignant. You can almost smell the intolerable stench of decaying flesh…
Now imagine all of those decaying, tattered bodies came back to life, Night of the Living Dead style. Pretty fucking creepy right? Now check out this trailer for the Canadian Horror film Exit Humanity.
Written and directed by John Geddes, Exit Humanity stars Dee Wallace, Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects, Leatherface), Stephan McHattie (Pontypool), Mark Gibson, Jordan Hayes, Adam Seybold, and Brian Cox. Recently acquired by Bloody Disgusting Selects, this film will be available on DVD and On Demand sometime this year. There’s no release date, but it can’t come soon enough if you ask me!

How does a man deal with the loss of everything meaningful in his life, and the loss of mankind’s humanity amongst chaos and despair? Set in 1870’s Tennessee, Exit Humanity is the legend of Edward Young’s horrific and dramatic journey through an unexplainable outbreak of the walking dead to lay to rest the most important thing in his life, his son’s ashes. The bleak post-Civil War era backdrop highlights the severe divide that the United States was facing, and the true loss of hope that so many felt during this period in history.
Last month, Mr. Disgusting revealed that Exit Humanity “portrays a young man’s struggle to survive in the aftermath of an undead outbreak during the American Civil War” and is “heavily inspired by classic films such as Jeremiah Johnson and The Outlaw Josey Wales.” And another thing: “[Exit Humanity] blends live-action and animation to explore deeper themes of fear, hope, redemption, and evil.” Hmm, animation… I wonder what effect that will have on the historic feel the filmmakers are putting so much effort into creating. Still, I’m intrigued. (BD)
Are Historical Horror movies the next big trend on the horizon? Black Death, (which takes place in Medieval England) was one of the best films of 2011—in any genre! In June, we’ll get another terrifying retelling of American History with Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter 3D. And, if they can ever find a leading lady, we might one day see a twist on Jane Austin’s classic novel called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
I’ll let you know as soon as a release date is announced for Exit Humanity.
