If They Gave Oscars for Horror Movies: 2011

mmm_2011_a_l

Well, the Academy released its list of Oscar nominations this morning—and it looks like 2011 was the dullest year for cinema since the invention of motion pictures.  I’m almost proud of the fact that I haven’t seen a single film nominated for Best Picture.  I heard The Help is pretty good, but the rest of the contenders look ridiculously boring and mundane.  And they didn’t even nominate The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Melancholia!  Anyway, if you’re one of those people who actually cares, you can see all the nominees here:  http://oscar.go.com/nominees

Saucy Josh likes to imagine an alternate reality where Horror films are held in such high regard that the Academy created categories just for them.  I’ve gone so far as to look back over 30 years to compile lists of what films would have been nominated had a category existed for Best Horror Picture.  You can see my attempts at revisionist history on my personal website, Blood and Guts for Grown Ups where you can find out who won Best Horror Film Oscars in the 80’s , the 90’s, and the 00’s.

Now, if you are so inclined, drop into my bloody fantasy world after the jump to find out the nominees are for Best Actor in a Horror Picture, Best Actress in a Horror Picture, and Best Horror Picture of 2011

Best Actress in a Horror Picture, 2011:

Elizabeth Olsen for Martha Marcy May Marlene

Lin Shaye for Insidious

Katie Holmes for Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Katrina Bowden for Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Chloe Csengery for Paranormal Activity 3

Best Actor in a Horror Picture, 2011:

Aidan Gillen for Wake Wood

Damian Walshe-Howling for The Reef

Eddie Redmayne for Black Death

Peter Stormare for Undocumented

Tyler Labine for Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Best Horror Picture, 2011:

Insidious

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (this film didn’t make it onto my list of the 10 Best Horror Pictures of 2011 http://filmsponge.com/the-10-best-horror-films-of-2011 for one simple reason: I hadn’t seen it yet!)

Black Death

Paranormal Activity 3

The Reef

Check back on Sunday February 26th to find out who the winners are.  If you’re going too be busy watching Billy Crystal act like a ham, you probably don’t care.
