Steve Knight, the writer behind such films as Eastern Promises and Dirty Pretty Things, has finally secured a budget, AND a leading man for his upcoming action-drama Hummingbird. Stuntman-turned-action-superstar Jason Statham will helm the starring role in Knight’s directorial debut film.
Check out the Eastern Promises-ish sounding details of Statham’s role in Hummingbird, after the jump.
As I mentioned earlier, Knight was the writer behind the heavy European gang-flick Eastern Promises, and after hearing the overview of Statham’s role in Hummingbird, it’s quite apparent the two scripts were penned by the same writer.
In the upcoming film Hummingbird, Statham will star as an ex-Special Forces soldier who winds up working on the wrong side of the law in London’s crime-ridden underbelly. But as luck would have it, Statham’s character happens upon the gift of a brand new identity – an identity which he will use to fight crime with …this time around.
See what I mean? Although, it’s not quite the same story Knight used in Eastern Promises, both films share a similar theme/feel — The story takes place in the European criminal underworld. The “seemingly bad guy” isn’t actually a bad guy after all.
Lets just hope there isn’t another shower room fight scene in this one… :/
Anyways, filming for Hummingbird is scheduled to begin early 2012, on location in “foggy London Town”. IM Global will finance the film.
