It looks like Elizabeth “Lizzie” Olsen, the 23-year-old younger sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, is carving a niche for herself in the Horror genre (no more bit parts in her sisters’ ridiculous, straight-to-DVD movies!).  In addition to her role in The Silent House and Red Lights (along side Robert DeNiro and Sigourney Weaver), Lizzie played the title role in Martha Marcy May Marlene which received amazing reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Fox Searchlight plans to release Martha Marcy May Marlene on October 21st.  Written and directed by Sean Durkin, this film also stars Sarah Paulson and John Hawkes.

Synopsis:

Haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman (Olsen) struggles to re-assimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult.

The trailer confirms that Martha, Marcy, May, and Marlene are all names for the main character.  This seems to suggest a split personality of some kind.  People forced to endure extreme trauma have been known to create alternate personas in order to distance themselves, or as a coping mechanism.  Martha Marcy May Marlene seems to allow for this possibility.  Although the name “Marcy May” was bestowed upon her by a sinister cult leader, Martha seems unable to separate past from present (or dreams from reality) as well as being unable to reconcile who she was, from who she is expected to be.

Ever since Reverend Jim Jones shocked the world in Guyana, there have been plenty of movies made to remind us that cults are scary.  Martha Marcy May Marlene joins this club that already includes famous titles like: The Wicker Man, Children of the Corn, Rosemary’s Baby, Martyrs, and (most recently) Red State.

I had to visit Martha Marcy May Marlene’s official website to figure out the deal with this poster.  Apparently, it has to do with smart phones and scanning.  While I’m sure this ploy pleases some technophiles, I find it annoying.  Anyway, watch the video below to see how it works.

Props to Lizzie Olsen for storming the Horror genre with such gusto!  If she keeps it up, Scream-Queen status may be bestowed in the not-too-distant future.

Looks good and creepy. Lizzie Olsen looks to be a good actress and heading towards great things.

Agreed. And she’s not all anorexic looking like Ashley and Mary-Kate.
