‘The Divide’: Official Trailer and Limited Release Date

TheDivide

The Divide first hit our radar back in August when we showed you the disturbing (yet somehow beautiful) opening sequence.  Today, Best Horror Movies reports that The Divide will receive a limited release beginning January 13, 2012.

Anchor Bay is the studio distributing The Divide which stars Super Hottie Lauren German (Hostel: Part II), Michael Biehn (Bereavement, Grindhouse), Milo Ventimiglia, Michael Eklund, Rosanna Arquette and Courtney B. Vance (Panther).  The Divide is directed by New French Extremity Superhero Xavier Gens.

Trailer:

In this graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller, nine strangers—all tenants of a New York high rise apartment—escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement. Trapped for days underground with no hope for rescue, and only unspeakable horrors awaiting them on the other side of the bunker door, the group begins to descend into madness, each turning on one another with physical and psycho-sexual torment. As supplies dwindle, and tensions flare, and they grow increasingly unhinged by their close quarters and hopelessness, each act against one another becomes more depraved than the next. While everyone in the bunker allows themselves to be overcome by desperation and lose their humanity, one survivor holds onto a thin chance for escape even with no promise of salvation on the outside.

When they warn that The Divide is “graphic and violent” you really ought to take heed.  Gens’ most famous film, Frontier(s) is an unflinching Opus of Blood and Carnage that was denied a limited US release due to an NC-17 rating.  Gens pulls no punches, somehow exceeding expectations even when you’re already ready for the worst.  Critical response was almost unanimously positive when The Divide first screened at SXSW.  Still, I’m certain that many people will ultimately be quite shocked by this film.  While the trailer has definite elements of science fiction, The Divide is apocalyptic Horror of the darkest variety.  Mark my words.

P.S.  If you call yourself a Horror Fan but haven’t seen Frontier(s) yet, I’m revoking your membership card.  Hand it over!
